Step Function Growth
Finding growth opportunities that quadruple
Hey guys,
I’m currently in Bali, pursuing what I call a "step function" improvement in my personal life, and I wanted to share some of my thinking around it.
The standard advice often goes: good things take time, get rich slowly, be patient with results.
Honestly—I’m tired of that.
The biggest changes in my life have come from periods of intensity and focused intention. Here are a few examples:
Learning frontend development in three days, then tackling backend in a one-week sprint shortly after.
Training to run within 30 days—from never running before to running 5km non-stop, shaving 15 minutes off my time.
Learning my entire statistics course in seven days before the final exam, enough to actually teach my peers.
Closing a business deal that quadrupled our revenue. Instead of a linear growth curve, it was a leap.
In general, I’m looking for "step functions" when it comes to personal and professional growth.
A step function, in this context, is an interval on a graph that represents an instantaneous leap from one level to another as you move across the x-axis.
These are the types of transformations I’m after—immediate, impactful shifts.
Filtering these opportunities is easier than you might think. Just ask yourself:
If this goes well, how much will it move the needle?
In my opinion, when you’re starting something new, you should aim for projects with step function potential. Let’s skip the marketing campaign that brings a 2% improvement—instead, let’s test 10 campaigns with the potential for 3,000% growth.
On a personal note, I’m increasing the intensity of my content production, focusing on weight loss, and exploring new business opportunities. For me, traveling to Bali for 21 days—with a gym on-site, controlled meals (no junk food), a change of environment, and 15 other guys all pushing for similar improvements—creates the potential for rapid transformation in a short period.
So, are you working on step function projects or linear ones?
Cheers,
Ajay
